Courtney Wayment, a two-time NCAA Division 1 cross country All-American at Brigham Young, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her recent string of impressive track performances at the Washington Indoor Preview and Washington Indoor Invitational at the Dempsey facility in Seattle, and the prospect of competing at her first NCAA Indoor Championship meet March 11-13 at Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Wayment, who took over the collegiate indoor lead in the 3,000 meters with her personal-best 8:54.90 on Feb. 12, revisits being able to compete in the race with unattached teammate Anna Camp-Bennett (8:52.75) as well as Olivia Hoj (8:56.91), who also has indoor eligibility remaining for the Cougars. She reflects on anchoring the BYU distance medley relay to an 11:03.62 performance Jan. 29 at the Washington Indoor Preview and how significant the opportunity has been to join forces with Alena Ellsworth, Lauren Ellsworth and Hoj in that event. Wayment also analyzes the mile depth the Cougars possess, with four Cougars currently ranked in the top 16 in Division 1, including Hoj, Kate Hunter and Simone Plourde. She shares how meaningful it was to participate in a snow run over the weekend with all of her teammates, with BYU coach Diljeet Taylor often dividing workouts during the winter among the student-athletes competing in cross country and those with only indoor track eligibility available. Wayment examines the potential for both the Cougars' cross country lineup and indoor track and field athletes to contend for team podium finishes at the national championship meets, first in Arkansas, followed by March 15 at the Division 1 cross country final in Stillwater, Okla. She expresses gratitude for the organization and direction provided by Taylor during such a unique and unprecedented season, along with offering praise for all of her teammates for being so adaptive and versatile with their training. Wayment, who graduated in the spring with a degree in exercise and wellness, explains the post-baccalaureate academic program she has been focusing on this year, which includes courses in women's health and entrepreneurship, along with family studies.
