Multis and Distances Kick Off UW Invitational

SEATTLE - The two-day UW Invitational got out of the blocks Friday night at the Dempsey Indoor Facility with mult-event competitions, distance medley relays and men's and women's 5000-meter runs on the docket. Several times were set that rank with the very best in the country in the season to this point.

The Baylor women turned in the fastest distance medley relay in the country so far this year, running 11:07.00 to pass the automatic qualifying standard. The Huskies ran fifth in their first DMR of the season in 11:19.94, five seconds faster than their best time in 2007. Senior All-American Amanda Miller led off for UW, and had the lead after finishing her 1200m leg. Freshman Marie Tvare and junior Michelle Turner carried the baton over the 400- and 800-meter legs, then cross country All-American Katie Follett anchored the group in the 1600.

Hawaii's Annett Wichmann won the women's pentathlon with 4,027 total points, the third-best score posted this season. On the men's side, with four events of the heptathlon completed, Oregon's Ashton Eaton leads the way with 3,268 points. Bolota Asmeron of the Oregon Track Club and formerly of Cal took the men's 5000m in 13:45.68, while former NCAA 10k champion Sara Slattery, running for adidas, won the women's 5k in 15:32.28

 

 

Highlights tomorrow include a women's pole vault field that boasts three former NCAA Champions, all since 2003, in Chelsea Johnson, Becky Holiday, and UW alum Kate (Soma) Conwell. Johnson is the NCAA record holder with a vault of 15' 1" in 2006. Also of interest will be Husky senior Norris Frederick in a long jump rematch with Andrew DaShalles of Cal State Northridge. DaShalles won the NCAA outdoor long jump title in an upset with Frederick finishing third.

Track events begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow and field events will start at 8:30 a.m.
